The Hickman County SCD is involved in a variety of activities with other agencies and local schools. We assist through technical assistance, cost-share projects, and educational and community outreach.

Enviroscape:

Enviroscape^® is a scaled down model of a watershed that enables students to visually learn about stormwater runoff, water pollution, water quality, watersheds, and personal stewardship through a speaker led presentation. Throughout the year the HCSCD receives requests for the demonstration of the Enviroscape® for a variety of events including classroom projects, the local library special interest, Boy Scout and Girl Scout Troops. Envirothon: 

The 2023 Buffalo-Duck River RC&D Regional Envirothon was held on April 19, 2023. We had 7 high school teams (Approximately 60 students) to compete from Hickman, Lewis, Perry, and Wayne counties.  The students are tested over Forestry, Wildlife, Aquatics, Soils, and a Current Issue.  Winners of the competition are then eligible to attend the State RC&D competition.  

Farm Day:

 We had the pleasure of attending Farm Day on May 5, 2023 in Perry County at the Byrd Family Farm. Lots of fun learning about agriculture!!

Sammy Soil:

The little dirt clod, as he is sometimes called, was birthed through rock particles, water, air, leaves and the artistic mind of long-time employee Ernest “Howard” Whitaker.  Sammy Soil was brought to the national level through a series of school activity books to help school children learn the many different aspects of soil conservation. For almost 50 years, Whitaker has seen his “son” Sammy evolve from a simple water color drawing, to a national symbol for soil and land conservation.
